Ukrainians in Madrid urge NATO to help, stop war

STORY: Holding signs reading “NATO stop Russia’s genocide in Ukraine” and “NATO, be (as) brave as Ukraine”, protesters gathered near the venue to demand more weapons to fight and the closure of the air space over the beleaguered country.

The protest was held after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told NATO leaders his country needed more advanced weapons and money to defend itself against Russia, warning that Moscow's ambitions did not stop at Ukraine.

“We have people ready to fight for Ukraine, those are men and women who are ready to protect their country and who really love Ukraine,” said Ukrainian protester Kateryna Darchyk.

Moscow calls its actions a "special military operation" to disarm Ukraine and rid it of what it calls anti-Russian nationalism fomented by the West. Ukraine and the West say Russia launched an unprovoked war of aggression.
