Ukrainians Target Russian Positions in Kharkiv Region With Self-Propelled Howitzer Units

Ukrainian forces used Soviet-era Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer artillery systems to target Russian positions in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on May 7, video from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows.

RFE/RL’s Ukrainian service correspondent Maryan Kushnir said, “In the background, you can see a Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer 2S1 firing at a concentration of Russian infantry and vehicles. That’s the target of the Ukrainian artillery,” according to a translation provided by RFE/RL.

Germany has pledged to send seven self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine and the Netherlands will send five, Reuters reported, as NATO countries began ramping up Western-made arms aid in May.

Ukrainians have also deployed an “experimental” Ukrainian-made, wheeled 155-mm self-propelled howitzer, the 2S22 Bohdana, according to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
