Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice to open this summer at Stockton's Miracle Mile

Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice is coming to Stockton − some 2,400 miles from home.

The famous fluffy iced treat will be served at the Miracle Mile at 2130 Pacific Avenue, the same location that housed See's Candies for 56 years from 1953 until its closing in 2009.

“Stockton's Miracle Mile offers Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice the opportunity to share a world-class shave ice experience with families and friends in a friendly and wholesome environment," David Yamashiro, CEO and co-founder of Ululanis Hawaiian Shave Ice, wrote in an email to The Record. “We believe Stockton will continue to grow in population and influence, and we look forward to being part of that growth.”

Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice will have a soft open on July 15, Yamashiro said. A grand opening will follow.

Ululani, Yamashiro, and his longtime friend Brad Edgerton decided to start the legacy that we now know as Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice. Their first brick-and-mortar shop opened in Lahaina, Maui, in December 2008.

“Ulu (Ululani) initially started this business when we lived on the mainland, in Portland, OR/ Vancouver, WA. The intent was to provide people living in the "mainland" the opportunity to taste our version of shave ice, which was much different from what we grew up eating in Hawaii,” Yamashiro said. “When we decided to move back to Hawaii, we were able to differentiate our shave ice even more with the fineness of our shave and our "true to taste" homemade syrups using pure-cane sugar and real fruit purees whenever possible.”

Their first franchise location opened in Kailua, Kona, in Hawaii, in 2017. Their first outside Hawaii location came to California in Hollywood. They opened in October 2022.

"Unique, Gourmet, Delicious" are the words Yamashiro used to describe Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice.

Out of Hawaii, you can only find Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice flavors in Los Angeles. That is soon changing with its first Central Valley location opening in our backyard of Stockton.

"Stockton is a gem in California's Central Valley," Yamashiro said.

In January, they opened their first Oahu franchise. They will be opening four more franchises this year, with three in California from Stockton, Redlands, and Livermore, to Austin, Texas, Yamashiro said.

“Additional locations in Waimanalo, Hawaii, and the gulf coast of Florida are planned for early next year," Yamashiro said.

The owners of the Stockton location are not unfamiliar with local eateries and businesses. The husband and wife duo Jonnie and Tammy Nguyen own the first Central Valley location of Ululani's and a few other businesses in the Miracle Mile.

The Nguyen's are owners of CoCoro, a Japanese Bistro & Sushi Bar at 2105 Pacific Avenue, and co-owned El Chilango Chido, a Mexican Restaurant with Cuauhtémoc Rivera, at 2535 Pacific Avenue.
