Um, This Box Braids Look Is Pure F-I-R-E

From Cosmopolitan

So you probably know by now that I’m absolutely obsessed with box braids. But as someone who loves to constantly switch up her look, it isn’t super ideal for me to sit for hours and hours to get an expensive style that I’ll have to keep on my head for at least a month (you know, to make the time and money worth it).

And I know I’m not the only one who faces the “to get box braids or not to get box braids” dilemma, so on this week’s The Braid Up, our hairstylist guru, Stasha Harris, is giving us a solution. It’s a box braids wig. Yup—instead of braiding your actual hair, your stylist braids a wig. Translation: You can wear it over and over again, allowing you to rock box braids whenever you want, for however long you want, without having to spend a ton of time or $$$ on the process.

You’re definitely wondering if the wig, you know, looks like a wig. And I can promise you that it by no means looks fake. The trick is in the knotless technique Stasha uses to create the braids. To recap: Knotless box braids are created using a feed-in technique, where braided hair is fed into your natural hair (or in this case, the hair from the wig) to get a flatter installation that makes it look like the braids are coming straight out of your scalp. Cool, right?

Interested in trying out this look? Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Braid your natural hair into cornrows. This’ll keep your hair protected and flat under the wig and you won’t have to deal with any bumps and lumps, allowing it to fit better. P.S. You’ll want to use a non-flaky edge control to help keep your parts smooth.

2. Combine black and blonde hair extensions at the back of your head to create the braid. Not only does this give you a dope two-tone look, but it also gives the look more depth and dimension.

3. Add wig glue to your hairline. This helps keep your wig secure, so it literally doesn’t fly off your head. Another bonus? It also helps blend the look of the lace front, making it lie more naturally against your skin.

4. Apply rollers to the ends of your braids and then dip them in hot water. The hot water seals your ends so they don’t unravel, and the rollers add cute curls to the look.
