Um, I’m Fully Obsessed With These Jumbo Knotless Box Braids

From Cosmopolitan

Okay, don’t get me wrong: I love the look of box braids as much as the next girl—but I do have a couple of gripes. First of all, box braids can take forever (up to 10 hours, to be exact), and no matter how many snacks you bring or how great the podcasts you have queued up, time doesn’t move any faster. Plus, to create a traditional box braid, you have to tie a knot at the base of the braid to anchor it—and sometimes that knot can feel super tight against your scalp (and the tension itself can even lead to breakage). Thankfully, our hair guru, Stasha Harris, has blessed us with a box-braid style that solves both of these issues. Meet this week’s The Braid Up look: jumbo knotless box braids.

Yup, the large size of these box braids means you won’t have to sit in a chair for hours. And thanks to the fact that they’re knotless box braids, they’re created using a feed-in technique, meaning braided hair is fed into your natural hair to get a flatter installation that isn’t as heavy on your scalp. Bonus? They’re also mad cute, so there’s really no excuse not to get them.

Down to recreate this look? Here’s everything you need to know:

1. Make sure your hair is freshly washed and detangled. You want a good base for your braids, and that means starting off with clean and moisturized hair. Lather up with a sulfate-free shampoo (which won’t dry out your hair) beforehand.

2. Put two to three pumps of mousse on top of your braids. This helps to prevent frizz and flyaways from popping up. Work the mousse through your hair in the morning, wrap it up, and then hit it with a blow dryer.

3. Dip the ends of your braids in hot water to seal them. This is a trick most braiders use to finish off braids, making sure they are sealed and won’t unravel. Simply bring a pot of water to a boil, then carefully dip your ends in them for about a minute.

4. Switch up your look. This style is super versatile—you can wear it in a ponytail, straight down your back, in a bun, half up, half down, etc.—so your options are pretty endless.
