Um, Tide's New Packaging Looks Like Boxed Wine...and the Internet Does Not Approve

Sometimes, even the best-intentioned plans explode in a fiery blaze. Take for example Tide's new "Eco Box" detergent packaging, which has been steadily breaking the internet over the past 48 hours.

The idea here is forward-thinking and sharp: By switching to cardboard, the company will now use 60 percent less plastic. The problem? Simply put, people are stupid. Remember the Tide Pod challenge, where teens were daring eachother to eat detergent like gummies? And it got so bad that the government had to step in and remind the world it's not OK to ingest them? Well, folks are thinking that in light of this, putting detergent in a twist-open box (that's nearly identical to Franzia) isn't the smartest choice.

According to Buzzfeed, a P&G spokesperson had this to say on the matter: "We all know laundry detergent is for cleaning clothes. To be sure people know this is detergent, we put a large picture of our Tide bottle on the side of the box. Whether your Tide comes in a box or a bottle, it should be stored up and away, out of the reach of children."

We'd love to give the youth of America the benefit of the doubt here, but we can't help but feel that Twitter user Alex Ong's synopsis—"this will end in tears and death"—is a bit too on-the-nose.
