‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Soundtrack Is Full of Bangers

The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic series of the same name by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá, is a fast-paced, eccentric, always-something-happening kind of show. So, of course, it makes sense for the show's soundtrack to match. Showrunner Steve Blackman has been open about the fact that he writes certain scenes with certain songs in mind, and then the show makes sure that those songs end up in the final cut. There's no skimping when it comes to music.

"I discover some artists and I just think, ‘That is a great song,’" he says. "And sometimes I instantly know what scene I want to put it into, or I’m writing a scene and then I’m inspired by something in the scene to connect with the song." The Umbrella creator tells Men's Health that he writes scenes with music in mind, and encourages the other writers on the show's staff to as well. Then, working with music supervisor Jen Malone, they work out a final list—sometimes with some song substitutes included.

Throughout the three seasons of Umbrella Academy, one of the hallmarks of the show's soundtracks has been exciting covers; intriguing versions of familiar songs made to feel new. In some cases these make a lot of sense—Way's own cover of "Happy Together" is a joy—and in other cases they're more surprising—a Ska cover of Billie Eilish in Season 2 is weird in a way that makes the perfect amount of sense. But perhaps weirder than anything that's come before is a cover of "House of the Rising Sun" in Season 3, sung with all sorts of vocal inflections and vibrato by none other than...Jeremy Renner. That's right, Hawkeye himself, belting his soul out on The Umbrella Academy soundtrack. To quote Mr. Renner's co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron: Bet you didn't see that coming.
