🌱 UMMC Gets $3M For Mental Health + JPS Students' Creative Video

Morning, Jackson! Here's everything you need to know to get this Tuesday started off right.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy and cooler. High: 52 Low: 28.

Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, burnout among healthcare workers continues to rise. In an effort to combat this, the University of Mississippi Medical Center has been given a $3 million federal award as part of the Biden administration's American Rescue Plan. The funds will allow the Jackson-based medical center to offer new support tools to help staff cope with the challenges of the pandemic and improve their overall mental health. (WAPT Jackson)

  2. A group of Jackson high school students has found a creative way to encourage kids to mask up. Students from Jackson Public Schools created two videos geared toward elementary students, complete with singing and rapping, to encourage them to wear their masks properly. The series revolves around a superhero who promotes proper mask-wearing and a villain who takes people's masks. (WJTV)

  3. Two young women were found dead on Sunday inside a room at the Rainbow Motel on Medgar Evers Blvd. Jermaine White, 38, has been arrested for the murders of the two women, whose names have not been released. According to Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Deric Hearn, White and the women appeared to know each other, and had spent the day together; officials have "no evidence" that prostitution was involved. From our sponsor:

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They’re chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond “Dry January.” We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we’ve since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they’ve extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.

Today in Jackson:

  • JHLS Board of Trustees Meeting - Eudora Welty Library (4:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • A Jackson school bus got stuck in a hole on McWillie Circle on Monday morning. The hole resulted from a water main bursting on Sunday night, causing water to flood the street and the asphalt to cave in. (WAPT Jackson)

  • A Silver Alert has been issued for 47-year-old Monique Green, who has been missing from Jackson since Jan. 18. Family members report that Green has a medical condition that may impair her judgment. (WLBT)

  • The Mississippi Children's Museum is hiring for a series of full-time and part-time positions. Don't miss your opportunity to apply! (Facebook)
