UN aid chief says famine may not be declared in Somalia

STORY: The number of East Africans facing acute food insecurity has jumped by 60% to 82 million in the past year. In West Africa, it has risen from 31 million to 42 million.

"As we know, there are a number of specific, technical thresholds" to declare famine, Griffiths said, adding, "whether you say famine is there now or not, it's killing people. And that's good enough, I think, for us to take action."
