UN shares how many people fled Ukraine due to the war

NV has collected key data about Ukrainian refugees. According to UN figures, more than a quarter of Ukraine’s population has left the country, and more than a fifth of those that remain have been displaced from their homes and had to move to another part of Ukraine.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, about 7.8 million refugees from Ukraine were recorded across Europe.

Another 6.5 million of Ukrainians have become internally displaced people (IDPs).

Among the top hosting countries are following:

  • Poland — 1,529,355

  • Germany — 1,021,667

  • Czech Republic — 466,872

  • Italy — 164,171

  • Spain — 156,753

  • United Kingdom — 147,800

  • Bulgaria — 146,659

The UN also reported over 2.8 million Ukrainians have ended up in the aggressor country of Russia, including abducted persons.

On Dec. 18, 1990, the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Ten years later, Dec. 18 became the day to recognise the role and contribution of migrants in our societies. Migration is driven by aspirations for dignity, safety and peace in the first place, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO has declared.
