A 69-year-old man will go on trial next year after he was charged with the murder of retired postmistress Una Crown.

The widow, 86, was found lying in a pool of blood and with her clothing burned in her hallway in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, in 2013.

Police said that a post-mortem examination showed that she died from stab wounds to her neck and chest.

David Newton, accused of her murder, appeared in court earlier.

The defendant, of Magazine Close, Wisbech, spoke at Cambridge Crown Court only to confirm his identity.

He was arrested on Monday and has not been asked to enter a plea.

Judge Mark Bishop set a provisional trial date of 6 January 2025, with a time estimate of four weeks. He remanded Mr Newton in custody until a plea hearing at the same court on 23 May.

Mrs Crown's death was initially treated as an accident when she was found at her home in Magazine Lane on 13 January 2013 before a murder investigation was launched days later.
