Unadilla Town Hall closed after car crashes into it

Feb. 12—A car crashed through the side of the Unadilla Town Hall Saturday, and the building will remain closed until further notice.

Town Supervisor George DeNys said one employee was in the back of the building when the accident occurred at a little after 11:30 a.m. and was startled, but not injured.

"It was a freak accident," he said. He said he was waiting for the accident report from the State Police, but said a person was driving along state Route 7 when they left the roadway, drove across the lawn and parking lot before hitting the town hall building. "It was airborne for a little while," he said.

The car entered the building between an office and the entryway to the town clerks office, where the town court and town meetings are held, and crashed into the opposite wall. In addition to the two walls, the vehicle damaged the bench where the town board and judge sit during meetings and court respectively. Because of this, court will be adjourned for two weeks and the town board will move its meetings.

The Unadilla Fire Department is letting the town board use its firehouse for town meetings, DeNys said. The town hopes to set up town court at the Wells Bridge firehouse in the coming weeks, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.

Unadilla Town Clerk Terry Yoder said she will be working from home, but will check her email and phone for messages.

A note on the town hall door said tax payments and dog licenses can be put in the drop box labeled Tax Collector/Town Clerk by the door. Correspondences can be emailed to Yoder at unadillaclerk@stny.rr.com, or call 607-369-4433 extension 1 and leave a message.

Correspondence to the town court can be placed in the drop box labeled Court, or emailed to unadillatowncourt@nycourts.gov, a sign on the door said.

DeNys said they are still waiting for the insurance adjuster to come assess the building, and hope to start cleaning up the debris later this week.

"I hope to have more information at tomorrow night's meeting," DeNys said. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. the Unadilla Fire Department at 72 Clifton St. in Unadilla.
