Unatego girls use big second half to top Watkins Glen 6-2

Oct. 21—The Unatego girls topped Watkins Glen 6-2 in the first round of the Section IV Class C playoffs on Wednesday.

After allowing the first goal of the game, the Spartans took a 2-1 lead into the half and went on to score four times in the second half.

Scoring for Unatego were Lilyanna Barnes with one goal and two assists, Kylie Mussaw and Bailey McCoy, who each had one goal and one assist, Tatum Codington, Avery James and Alexa Lucia, all of whom scored one goal, and Anabel Rommer, who had one assist.

Skye Hanrath scored both goals for Watkins Glen while Abby Gibson had an assist.

In the net for Unatego was Sarah Ostrander who had five saves while Lily Ameigh had 19 saves for Watkins Glen.

Unatego will host Delhi on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.

Franklin 4, South Kortright 0

The Franklin girls defeated South Kortright 4-0 in the first round of the Section IV Class D playoffs on Wednesday thanks to a brilliant performance by Shannon Kingsbury.

Kingsbury scored all four goals for the Purple Devils, getting started early with the first goal coming 57 seconds into the game. Kayla Campbell added two assists while Leah Hyzer also had a helper.

Linsey Van Dyke had one save for Franklin.

The Purple Devils will host Roxbury in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Roxbury 6, Charlotte Valley 0

Courtney DeMaio led the Rockets to a 6-0 victory over the Wildcats in Wednesday's Section IV Class D first round playoff game.

DeMaio notched a hat trick to lead the Roxbury attack. Also finding the back of the net were Kimora Brown, Kylie DeMaio, and Olivia Grieco. Mikayla Wright, Payge DeMaio, and Mya Johnston each recorded an assist. Bryanna Meehan earned the shutout in goal, making five saves for the Rockets. Charlotte Valley's Cadence Santiago made 10 stops.

Roxbury will visit Franklin on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Class D Quarterfinals.

Delhi 2, Greene 2

(Delhi wins on penalties)

Delhi narrowly defeated Greene on penalty kicks in the first round of the Class C playoffs on Wednesday after a tightly-contested game ended in a 2-2 tie and remained that way after two overtime periods.

It took two rounds of penalty kicks to determine a victor.

After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs scored twice in the second half on goals by Eleanor Wagner and Abbie Leahy. Amanda Nealis provided an assist.

Scoring for Greene were Cali Knapp and Andrea Trifunovic while Cassie Butler had two assists.

In goal, Molly Cornell saved seven shots for Greene, and Sylvia Liddle blocked three shots for Delhi.

Delhi will visit Unatego in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Milford 2, Laurens 0

Milford defeated Laurens in the first round of the Section IV Class D playoffs on Wednesday.

Milford's two goals were scored by Kara Mertz and Lillian Cohn, with Alexis Sutphin providing an assist.

Goalkeeper Leeanna West saved three shots for Milford to earn the shutout.

Milford will travel to play Schenevus in the quarterfinals. The time of the game has yet to be determined.

Sidney was able to hold off a comeback attempt by Greene to win in five sets in Wednesday's volleyball match. The game scores read 25-15, 25-14, 18-25, 21-25, 25-20.

Leading the way for the Warriors were Aceleinn Brainard (three aces, one assist), Bri Taylor (three aces, one block, one dig), and Kenzie Gregory (two aces, two kills, two assists).

Greene's top performers were Mubetcel Adiguzel (four aces, three assists, three kills, two digs), Dayani Lora (five aces, three assists), and Nicole Marks (seven kills, four aces, two digs).

Proctor 66 (Tuesday)

The Cooperstown girls swim team defeated Utica Proctor 105-66 in a meet on Tuesday.

Ariadne Hodgson and Emily Kane both recorded a pair of first-place finishes for the Hawkeyes. Hodgson won the 50 freestyle (30.42) and 100 butterfly (1:20.98), while Kane took first in the 200 individual medley (2:36.71) and 100 backstroke (1:13.44).

Also winning for Cooperstown were Jaina Bischof (100 free), Rylie Austin (500 free), and Tara Phillips (100 breaststroke).

Cooperstown will visit Holland Patent on Friday.
