UNC basketball target Matthew Mayer names top four schools

The UNC basketball program has one available scholarship remaining for the upcoming season and has its sights set on one of the top transfers on the market.

Baylor transfer forward Matthew Mayer has been tied to the North Carolina program since he entered the transfer portal, and on Thursday his portal recruitment took the next step.

According to Jeff Goodman, Mayer named his four finalists: North Carolina, Illinois, Texas Tech and Memphis.

The 6-foot-9 forward withdrew his name from the NBA Draft process last week following the NBA Combine.

Last season, Mayer averaged 9.6 points per game, 5.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist for a Baylor team that was knocked out by UNC in the Round of 32.

Mayer is a hybrid forward who would fill the role left by Brady Manek alongside Armondo Bacot in the UNC front court. In his career, Mayer has shot 34.5 percent from three on 2.6 attempts per game.

Last year he attempted 4.1 3s per game but shot just 32.4 percent. As a junior, he shot 39.5 percent from three on 2.5 attempts per game.

For his career, Mayer has made 111 total 3s for Baylor.

The next step for Mayer is taking visits, which he should be setting up very soon. The recruiting dead period ends on Friday, May 27, meaning after that he can go back on campus visits.
