UNC Fans Defy Restrictions to Celebrate on Chapel Hill Streets

University of North Carolina (UNC) basketball fans defied restrictions to celebrate in large crowds on the streets of Chapel Hill on Saturday night, February 6, after UNC defeated Duke.

Footage captured by Morgan Pirozzi of the Daily Tar Heel shows a large crowd on Franklin Street, some jumping over a burning mattress. The Daily Tar Heel reported the celebrations, which included hundreds of students, took place ahead of in-person classes beginning on Monday.

The UNC chancellor, Kevin Guskiewicz, said there would be an investigation into the incident.

“I know many Tar Heels enjoy rushing Franklin Street to celebrate a big win, but we are in the middle of a global pandemic, and COVID doesn’t take a break for the Duke game,” Guskiewicz said. “We will investigate this incident and work with local authorities to pursue consequences.” Credit: Morgan Pirozzi/Daily Tar Heel via Storyful
