UNCW basketball 2022-23 schedule: Who are the two Power 5 teams and 18 CAA foes?

The Colonial Athletic Association grew to 13 teams this off-season and, for the 2022-23 basketball season, the UNCW men will get to check out the arenas of three of its four new members.

The conference released each team's opponents on Friday afternoon for an 18-game conference schedule. Each team plays six home-and-homes, three teams only on the road and three teams only at home.

James Madison moved to the Sun Belt at the end of the last school year. Hampton, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook entered the league this summer.

2022 CBI FINAL: Never-say-die Seahawks win postseason tourney title

The Seahawks will meet Charleston, Elon, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook and William & Mary twice during the regular season.

UNCW also gets home games against Northeastern, Towson and Hampton, and road games at Hofstra, Drexel and Delaware.

The league's release said teams will play on Thursdays and Saturdays, with two three-game weeks scheduled, including games on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 16). With that calendar in place, conference games will start just after New Year's Day.

With those opponents determined, and with a look at the contracts on file at UNCW, the team's schedule has almost fully taken shape.

Who's on UNCW's non-conference schedule?

The Seahawks will again play two Power 5 teams on the road in 2022-23. The team's final game vs. North Carolina, canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2020, is now back on the schedule, set for the season opener on Nov. 7 in Chapel Hill.

UNCW will travel to Oklahoma on Nov. 15 to play the Sooners in Norman. UNCW receives $75,000 for that game, according to the contract between the teams.

The Seahawks also play in a three-day bracket-style tournament for the first time since the 2010 Charleston Classic, traveling to the Bahamas for the Baha Mar Nassau Championship over Thanksgiving weekend. UNCW is joined by a host of strong mid-major programs over the three days of the event, starting against Missouri State at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.

The Seahawks are currently scheduled to play three non-Division I teams: an exhibition vs. Emory and Henry, small Christian college Carver on Nov. 11 and Mount Olive on Nov. 21.

Based off its current schedule, the Seahawks have room for two more games (28 games plus one three-game tournament) this season.

  • Nov. 2 Emory and Henry at UNCW (exhibition)

  • Nov. 7 UNCW at North Carolina

  • Nov. 11 Carver at UNCW

  • Nov. 15 UNCW at Oklahoma, 7 p.m.

  • Nov. 21 Mount Olive at UNCW, 7 p.m.

UNCW plays guarantee games worth $20,000 each at Virginia and North Carolina in early December, and also will welcome Wofford and former assistant coach Jimmy Garrity on Dec. 22.

In the CAA, the Seahawks get home-and-home series with Charleston, Elon, Hampton, North Carolina A&T, Northeastern and Stony Brook. They also have home games vs. Drexel, Hofstra and Monmouth, and road trips to Delaware, Towson and William & Mary. Women's CAA games are traditionally on Fridays and Sundays.
