UNCW names Nicole Woods new women's basketball coach
UNCW announced Thursday afternoon that Nicole Woods, from UNC Charlotte, will be the next Seahawks head women's basketball coach.
The move comes after a disappointing season on the court for the Seahawks that saw the team win just five games in 30 appearances.
"We're very excited to welcome Nicole to the Seahawk family," UNCW athletics director Michael Oblinger said. "She has an excellent basketball pedigree and will bring new excitement to our program. Our student-athletes and staff will enjoy getting to know Nicole as the program prospers. It's a great day for our women's basketball program and Seahawk Nation."

Woods has spent the last 10 years with UNC Charlotte, serving in various assistant roles, most recently as associate head coach.
"I want to thank Chancellor (Aswani) Volety, Mike Oblinger and Tiffany Tucker for believing in me," Woods said. "The three of us will do remarkable things together. It will be a pleasure to work for such an amazing administration, and I am ready to lead this program to progressing daily while positively impacting the lives of these young ladies."
Woods, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, and recruiting coordinator for the 49ers over the last six seasons, played her college basketball at Belmont Abbey from 2002-2006 before playing professionally in England from 2007-2008.
After firing head coach Karen Barefoot in February of 2022, UNCW promoted assistant Tina Martin to interim coach for the 2022-2023 season.
Woods will be introduced at a press conference on Monday, Apr. 17, at 3 p.m. in the Golden Hawk Room of the Nixon Annex.
