UND makes FCS playoffs, will play at Weber State in first round

Nov. 20—GRAND FORKS — For the fourth time in seven years, the UND football team is in the FCS Playoffs.

The Fighting Hawks will travel to Ogden, Utah, to play Weber State at 3 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the 24-team tournament.

The winner of UND-Weber State will travel to No. 4 overall seed Montana State.

Weber State is 9-2 overall this season. The Wildcats hold an impressive 35-7 victory over FBS Utah State.

Weber State's only losses were by five points at Montana State and three points at home to Sacramento State. Both MSU and Sac State are top four overall seeds in the playoff bracket.

UND, 7-4 and ranked No. 16 in last week's FCS Top 25, has a common opponent with Weber State. Both teams played in Flagstaff this year against Northern Arizona.

UND beat NAU 27-24 with a wild comeback. Weber State also needed a late score to beat NAU last Saturday to win 33-31.

The Hawks are 1-4 all-time against Weber State. UND last beat Weber in 2016. UND lost 30-27 at Weber in 2019.

Weber plays outdoors at Stewart Stadium, a facility with a capacity of more than 17,000.

UND is 1-3 in its FCS Playoffs history.

The Fighting Hawks beat Missouri State in the spring of 2021 before bowing out in the FCS quarterfinals at James Madison.

The Hawks also lost to Richmond at home in 2016 and at Nicholls State to end the 2019 season.

UND missed the FCS playoffs a year ago, finishing 5-6 overall.
