Under the Dome podcast: Your North Carolina primary primer

Start your week in #ncpol #ncga with our latest Under the Dome politics podcast. Dawn Vaughan here, your News & Observer Capitol bureau chief and podcast host.

In our first episode of the year, for the week of Jan. 8, 2024, we bring you up to speed with a primary primer.

My colleagues Luciana Perez Uribe Guinassi and Kyle Ingramboth recently wrote about the top of the ticket for the North Carolina primary on March 5. That includes incumbent President Joe Biden as the only Democrat, and several Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, who faces various criminal and civil charges related to the 2020 election.

We also discuss the latest news from the State Board of Elections and Wake County Board of Elections, as well as primary polling and legislative candidates. Plus, where things stand with a federal investigation of comments made at UNC-Chapel Hill about the Israel-Hamas war.

Headliner of the Week

Stay tuned after the break for our picks for Headliner of the Week.

Here are spoilers: A shake up in court leadership among Republicans, all the good doggos and the departure of valued Capitol Press Corps colleague Travis Fain, who was a statehouse reporter for WRAL-TV.
