Work underway at closed Fieldston restaurant in Marshfield. Here's what we know so far

MARSHFIELD − The building that housed the Fieldston restaurant in Marshfield is getting a facelift and an interior upgrade, but what will open there – and when − remains unknown.

M. Justin Barrett, of Waltham, bought the property at 882 Ocean St. in May for $1.25 million.

Previous owner Jan Perrin had retired and closed the business last winter after running the restaurant for 28 years, including 22 as head chef. His initial asking price was $1.65 million.

The full building is 3,500 square feet, which includes the upstairs apartment and a personal roof deck. The lot size is half an acre and could have been split into two house lots with the town’s permission. The building is hooked up to the town's sewer system.

Permits approved to fix up former Fieldston building

Barrett said he is leasing the property to the people who will run whatever replaces the restaurant. He has declined to identify the tenant and what is planned for the property.

According to Marshfield Building Department files, several work permits have been approved for the property since the summer. A commercial building permit was submitted in May and approved at the end of July.

Work on the building covered by the permit includes removing half walls, extending the bar, refinishing floors in the dining room and any required plumbing and electrical work.

The permit lists the estimated cost for the work at $61,200.

A hint of what the Fieldston might become?

One possible hint of the building’s future use comes from a line in the electrical permit, which lists Barrett as doing business as “Duke’s Beach House.”

Whatever the new business might be, Barrett said a ready-to-occupy date has not been set.

“Work has been progressing slowly,” Barrett said in a text exchange Monday. “I am not happy about it, nor is the tenant.”

He blamed the delay on the lack of available tradesmen to speed the project along.

“(It's) much tougher than anticipated,” he said.
