Unemployment in Lenawee County, state steady from September to October

ADRIAN — Unemployment was mostly unchanged locally and across the state in October.

Lenawee County's unemployment rate ticked up from 3.9% in September to 4% in October, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Michigan's unemployment rate in October was the same as it was in September: 3.7%.

“Michigan regional labor markets displayed little change during October,” Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, said in a news release. “Payroll jobs advanced modestly in most metro areas over the month.”

Thirty-one Michigan counties demonstrated jobless rate advances between September and October, the release said. Twenty-three areas exhibited rate declines, and 29 county unemployment rates remained unchanged over the month. Jobless rates increased in 49 counties since October 2021.

Jobless rates in Lenawee County's neighboring Michigan counties reflected the statewide trend for October. Hillsdale County's rate was at 4.3% in October, up from 4.1% in September; Jackson and Washtenaw counties had no change in their rates, 4% and 3.3%, respectively; and Monroe County went from 4.3% in September to 4.4% in October, according to state data.

Lenawee County's unemployment rate this October wasn't much different from October 2021 when it was 3.9%.

The state's unemployment rate a year ago was 4.5%.

According to the monthly survey of employers, Michigan not seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs increased by 30,000 over the month, or 0.7%. Michigan’s total payroll job count was 4,413,000 in October. Large employment increases in industries such as government (up 13,000) and professional and business services (up 12,000) were partially offset by minor decreases across multiple other sectors.

Lenawee County's workforce in October stood at 43,966, according to state data. That's down from 44,595 in September. The number of people listed as unemployed in October, 1,767, was almost the same as in September, 1,755. The number fo people with jobs was down from 42,840 in September to 42,199 in October.
