Unemployment rate rises slightly

Jun. 24—Hundreds of jobs were added in Rockwall County during the spring, but the new positions didn't quite keep up with the demand for work, leading to slight increase in the county's unemployment rate.

Still, the numbers were much improved than at the same point one year ago and far better than in 2020, according to a report issued June 17 by the Texas Workforce Commission.

Rockwall County's unemployment rate was reported at 2.9% in May, up from 2.8% in April and below the 4.3% reported in May 2021.

Rockwall County's unemployment rate had climbed to a record 9.6% in May 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There were 57,458 people reported as employed in Rockwall County during May, an increase of 218 jobs since April and 3,727 more since the same point one year earlier.

More people were employed in Rockwall County last month than during any other May in history, according to the Texas Workforce Commission report.

A total of 1,728 people were reported to have filed for unemployment in Rockwall County last month, 92 more than in April, but 666 fewer people than in May 2021.

The county's civilian labor force grew by 310 people between April and May and 3,061 people in the past year.
