UNESCO puts five more Ukrainian cultural treasures on its protection list

UNESCO has added five more cultural heritage sites to the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reported on Instagram on Dec. 14.

The following cultural heritage sites located in Odesa, Chernihiv, Lviv, and Zakarpattya oblasts were included:

  • Wooden churches in the Carpathian region. The Church of the Archangel Michael, Uzhok, Zakarpattya Oblast;

  • Wooden churches of the Carpathian region. Wooden Church of St. George, Drohobych, Lviv Oblast;

  • The building of the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater;

  • Building of the David Oistrakh Odesa Oblast Philharmonic;

  • The Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv.

"I believe that together with the UNESCO community, we will create a strong circle of support, where cultural heritage unites us more strongly than any force trying to divide us," said Anastasia Bondar, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy, who took part in the UNESCO Committee meeting.

In September 2023, UNESCO placed 20 cultural sites in Ukraine under temporary enhanced protection. In addition, in 2023, UNESCO placed the historic center of Odesa, St. Sophia Cathedral and adjacent monastery buildings, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv, and the historic center of Lviv on the list of World Heritage in Danger.
