An unexpected break in the middle of season

This wasn’t how I planned to spend the heart of the season.

I’m going to have to take a break over the next few weeks as I recover from shoulder surgery. I took a stupid but particularly nasty fall in my house last week and the result was a mess in my upper left arm and shoulder area.

I’ve been busy the last few days finishing up stories that I had started for events and productions happening in the next few weeks. They will run during my absence. But there will likely be fewer reviews and some shows that I planned to cover in some way may be missed during my absence.

As someone who has a hard time taking a day off, this will be particularly difficult for me, especially with so much going on after the long pandemic break. I want to cover everything but know that’s impossible. In the meantime, my colleagues at the Herald-Tribune and a solid team of freelance writers and critics will keep you informed while I’m out. Please be kind and patient, and watch where you’re stepping.

This accident, means I'm going to miss the long-awaited openings of two plays this week – “The Great Leap” at Asolo Repertory Theatre, which was supposed to open two years ago, and “The Play That Goes Wrong,” which has had multiple COVID-related delays at Florida Studio Theatre.

A new Sarasota Opera season also gets underway Saturday night with the opening of “Tosca” marking the return of full-scale productions after more than a year of rarely seen chamber works. Circus Sarasota also begins its new season under the big top with Bello Nock leading the festivities in a new location at Benderson park.
