Unforgotten gets future confirmed by ITV following series 5 finale

ITV has confirmed the future of Unforgotten after its season 5 finale aired on telly.
The channel has now confirmed that Sanjeev Bhaskar and new recruit Sinéad Keenan will indeed return for a sixth series, to be written by creator Chris Lang.
ITV has offered the following preview of what's ahead: "Series six will follow DI Khan and DCI James as they investigate cold cases and unsolved crimes from the past, unravelling secrets and unearthing buried truths along the way. Further casting for the new series will be announced at the time of production."
A renewal is no surprise since Unforgotten has been ITV's top streaming show on the ITVX service so far this year, with 8.4 million streams coming in for episode one in consolidated figures.
The most recent fifth series involved a massive shift for Unforgotten, as Being Human's Sinéad Keenan took over as one of the lead detectives, replacing Nicola Walker.
At the time of the series 5 launch, the Irish actress admitted she'd been "reticent" to accept the role of DCI Jess James because her predecessor was so beloved by viewers.
"When you come into an established show, it's very, very different. And obviously, I'd seen the show, and Nicola is brilliant, so I was initially reticent about even reading the scripts. But then I read the scripts, and they were brilliant," she said (via RadioTimes).
"When I spoke to my agent she said, 'Apparently it's a really lovely job', and I was like, 'OK, you're just trying to sell this now'. My fear was that I didn’t want to be filling a Cassie-shaped hole."
Walker had appeared as DCI Cassie Stuart in the first four series of Unforgotten before the character was killed off in a shocking turn of events.
Unforgotten series 5 is currently available to stream in full on ITVX. No timeline has been announced yet for series 6 airing.
