UNH student struck by car on Main Street in serious condition

DURHAM — A University of New Hampshire student who was struck by a car in the area of Main Street was sent to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries, according to police.

On Tuesday at approximately 6:21 p.m., Durham police responded to the accident. The pedestrian, a 21-year-old from Bedford, was assisted by civilian witnesses until first responders arrived, police said. He was transported by McGregor EMS to Portsmouth Regional Hospital and later med-flighted to Maine Medical Center.

A spokesperson at Maine Medical Center on Wednesday said his condition is listed as serious.

The driver of the 2015 Buick SE Enclave that struck the pedestrian is also a 21-year-old UNH student, according to police. He was traveling westbound on Main Street between Depot Road and Sage Way when the accident happened, police said.

The driver was not injured and cooperated with officers, police said.

Asked if there would be charges against the driver, Durham Deputy Police Chief David Holmstock said the accident is still under investigation. Police said speed and impairment did not appear to be factors.
