The exit of defender Leonardo Bonucci after just six months at Union Berlin looks imminent.

Turkish top-flight club Fenerbahçe announced on Wednesday that the Italian 2021 European champion had arrived in Istanbul to undergo a medical ahead of a move.

The 36-year-old defender, whose contract with Juventus was not renewed in July, is hoping to get more playing time with the Süper Lig leaders in order to potentially make the national team squad for the European Championship in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024.

Under Union coach Urs Fischer and successor Nenad Bjelica, the 121-capped international made just seven league appearances and three appearances in the Champions League.

Union managing director Oliver Ruhnert, whose side have been in a Bundesliga relegation scrap, praised Bonucci for his contribution before Fenerbahce's statement.

"He is a very positive person, he has a really good character. I have rarely seen players with such merits who have integrated so well and behaved in such a great way as he has," Ruhnert told Wednesday's edition of Sport Bild magazine.

"As open as he has always been with us, we will also deal with him in this matter."
