Union City Dinor razed; Erie restaurants shift gears into fall with events, specials

The former Union City Dinor, a converted railroad car that closed 20 years ago, has been razed to make way for the community's Gateway Project, a redevelopment plan for the downtown area at the intersection of Main and High streets. Borough Manager Cindy Wells said there will be a courtyard in place of the railroad car, with an awning on the north side similar to the rail car's former awning.

The Cork 1794, 900 West Erie Plaza, is hosting a high tea party, Saturday, 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the patio, according to its Facebook page. The morning will be filled with tea etiquette, snacks, book reading, a surprise appearance and more. Tickets are $55 and cover both adult and children 5 years or older. Experience Children’s Museum will provide a hands-on learning project to complete and a book reading, while The Cork will provide tea party finger foods and Tea ServiceBuy tickets at bit.ly/Corkteaparty.

Meanwhile, speaking of Red Letter Hospitality,another of its properties, Molly Brannigans, 506 State St., will be exhibiting works by local artist Helen Tullio on Gallery Night, Saturday, from 7 to 10 p.m., according to its Facebook page.

Beechwood Inn's Hardwood Grille, 4102 West Lake Road, recently started a new happy hour with half off selected beers and new appetizers, according to its website. The fun will take place Mondays through Thursdays, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Ice cream stands to close for season

Sure signs that summer is coming to a close, both Creamland and Denny's have announced their closing dates for the season, according to Facebook pages bit.ly/dennysclosing and facebook.com/CreamlandDriveIn. Creamland will close Sept. 30 and Denny's on Oct. 2.

Delivery, pickup by Lisa

Dinner Is Served by Lisa, 334 W. Eighth St., is now offering online ordering at dinnerisservedcafe.com, according to their Facebook page. Both delivery and pick-up are available. This week's menu includes $13 glazed ribs and potato salad (gluten-free); $12 creole potpie (Andouille, peppers, onions, potatoes, pastry); $11 cabbage and potato portobellos (gluten-free and vegetarian); and the soup of the week, $5, is country chicken. Curbside service pickup runs 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Fall spirits

More signs of fall are at Erie Distillery, 1101 Peninsula Drive, which, according to its Facebook page, is featuring Spiced Apple Mules, made with its Spiced Rum and Apple Pie Moonshine.

Food partners will be at Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing, 8398 W. Main Road, Westfield, New York, on select Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through early October. Visit the Facebook page for information and hours. Select food trucks, including Over the Rainbow Food Truck and Alexander's on the Lake Pop-up (from nearby Findley Lake), and more will be taking turns serving food on the patio. Other food items (cheeses, meats, crackers, snacks, selections vary) are available for purchase seven days a week from your server.
