Union City junior wrestler Grady Iobe has been voted by you the readers as this week’s The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week.

This week’s Athlete of the Week poll broke the previous record of votes cast with 16,533 votes, cast among seven different choices over a three day period, a testament to the immense amount of pride you the readers have for your community and its athletes.

Iobe, a stalwart for the Division Four number four ranked Chargers, won the honor with 50.74% of the vote after amassing over 8,000 votes in the poll. Iobe was honored for his efforts at last Saturday’s New Lothrop Hall of Fame Invitational which saw the junior battle his way to a gold medal finish at 215 pounds. The New Lothrop Hall of Fame Tournament is annually one of the most competitive individual tournaments in the state, with over 20 teams present and more than half of them boasting a ranking in the top 10 of their respective Division. Iobe improved his record to 16-1 with the gold medal win and has since upped his season long record to 18-1 after a pair of wins in dual meet action this past Wednesday. Iobe is currently ranked third in the state at 215 pounds in Division Four according to Michigan Grappler.

Finishing in second place in this week’s poll was Quincy junior grappler Jacob Reif who finished with 42.73% of the vote. Reif was honored for his efforts at Saturday’s Hillsdale Team Tournament where he went 4-0 in a tough day of competition at 125 pounds. Reif, who is 15-3 on the season according to trackwrestling.com, added to his win total with two big wins this past Wednesday in a double dual, taking wins over two top 10 opponents at 125 pounds. Reif is currently ranked in the top 10 at 125 pounds in Division Three according to Michigan Grappler.

Rounding out the vote for the week of Jan. 3-9 were Bronson Basketball’s Haylie Wilson, Coldwater gymnast Charlotte Calhoun, Union City wrestler Logan Mears, and Coldwater Swimmer Lucas Wischmeyer.
