Union City VB takes down Concord in five set marathon

CONCORD, MI. — The Union City Lady Chargers took the long road trip to Concord Tuesday night to face off with the Concord Yellow Jackets in week four of the Big 8 conference schedule.Finding themselves down two sets to none with the game on the line, the Chargers dug deep and staged a dramatic comeback, and for the third time in those four weeks of Big 8 play the Chargers battled in a five set barn burner, coming back to take the 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 27-25 and 15-5 victory.“We had a night of very strong offensive play as well as a solid night on defense,” said Union City head coach Ashley Herman. “Concord served very tough tonight as well as put together a strong offense. After losing the first two sets we were forced to regroup, change some things up and work as an entire team to stay focused and strong to fight and win the next three. This team continues to amaze me on their ability to never give up and continue to fight to the very last points. They put together three very strong sets in a row to win the match!”Leading Union City at the net was junior Laynie Elkins who had a team high 12 kills to go with 13 digs and two aces.Also hitting double digits in kills was senior Mackenzie Hale with 11 while also adding a team high 14 digs and one block.Junior Jordan Chard led the team from the setter spot, recording 35 assists to go with seven digs and a team high five aces.Senior Carley Gordon tied for the team lead in digs with 14 to go along with six kills and one assist.Also helping the Chargers to the big five set win were Hailey Day with five kills, two aces and three digs; Aislynn Phelps with six kills, one ace and seven digs; Ariana Kincaid with three kills and one dig; Mara Bailey with one ace and four digs; and Gracie Phelps with one ace, one assist and six digs.Union City will see action on the courts again next Tuesday for a big one as they host perennial power Bronson for week five of Big 8 play.
