United Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Houston After Flames Spew From Engine

A United Airlines flight traveling from Houston to Fort Myers, Florida, on March 4 had to make an emergency landing back in Texas after experiencing an engine issue, the airline said in a statement.

Dorian D Cerda recorded this video showing flames spewing out of one of the plane’s engines, as a crew member says over the loudspeaker, “Hey, ladies and gentlemen. We realize something happened outside.”

Cerda told Storyful they “were approximately 15 minutes into (the) flight” when the incident occurred.

United Airlines said in a statement "flight 1118 returned to Houston shortly after takeoff due to an engine issue.

“The flight landed safely and the passengers deplaned normally,” United Airlines said, adding that they “arranged for a new aircraft to take our customers to their destination.”

Local news reported that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Credit: Dorian D Cerda via Storyful
