United signs new goalkeeper Tambakis

Mar. 12—New Mexico United signed goalkeeper Alex Tambakis on Thursday, filling a roster opening created when Cody Mizell signed a Major League Soccer contract last week.

Tambakis, a 6-foot-3, 28-year-old from Athens, Greece, has spent the past five seasons playing in USL with the Charleston Battery and North Carolina FC. Tambakis also spent six professional seasons with Panathinaikos of Super League Greece, helping his team to the 2014 championship.

He was a member of Greece's U-19 National Team in 2010-11.

"He has great presence in goal and with his experience in our league over the last five years he will undoubtedly instill confidence in our defensive unit," United coach Troy Lesesne said in a statement.

NMU is scheduled to begin preseason play March 20, hosting El Paso Locomotive FC at its Mesa del Sol training facility.
