The United States’ first death from monkeypox was reported in Harris County, Texas.

Harris County, Texas confirmed today that they are aware of a reported death due to monkeypox. The patient tested positive for monkeypox. The person was “severely immunocompromised,” per the Centers for Disease Control. State health officials cautioned that while the person had the disease, it was still being investigated how that factored into the death. Officials said an autopsy was being performed, and they expected the results to be ready in a few weeks. The CDC stated that an additional investigation is needed to understand what role Monkey Pox may or may not have played in their death. They said they would announce that information shortly as more information becomes available. It is important to note, monkeypox is rarely fatal and that most people who get this form of the disease are likely to survive. The report comes as alarm about the disease continues to rise, with 18,101 cases reported in the country so far, according to the CDC.
