Can the U.S. men's national soccer team complete the trifecta and get a third pivotal win this year against their main Concacaf rivals, Mexico?

The two square off at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium on Friday in a World Cup qualifier, the first between the two sides in the 2022 World Cup qualifying cycle.

Coach Gregg Berhalter's USMNT had a successful summer against Mexico. In the span of two months, the USMNT defeated Mexico twice for trophies, first in the Concacaf Nations League final and then to win the Concacaf Gold Cup.

The stakes Friday night, as seemingly always is the case between these two teams, are high. Through six matches played, Mexico sits atop the Concacaf World Cup qualifying standings with 14 points. The U.S. is in second with 11 points, followed by Canada (10), Panama (8) and Costa Rica (6). The top three teams automatically qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while the fourth-place team must compete in an inter-continental playoff.

Where is the USMNT-Mexico World Cup qualifier?

The game will be held at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, home to Major League Soccer's FC Cincinnati. This will be the sixth consecutive World Cup qualifying cycle that the state of Ohio has hosted the USMNT vs. Mexico game. The previous five took place in Columbus, where the MLS' Columbus Crew's former home, Historic Crew Stadium, was famous for the "Dos a Cero" games against Mexico, in which the USMNT prevailed 2-0 in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013. In 2017, Mexico defeated the U.S., 2-1.
