‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’ named best picture by AARP

Lee Daniels’ latest cinematic masterpiece is the cream of the crop among the senior set.

“The United States vs. Billie Holiday” has been named best film for AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards.

The epic film, which stars recent Golden Globe Award winner Andra Day as the trailblazing jazz singer and songwriter, tops the annual list that champions movies for grownups, by grownups, by advocating for the 50-plus audience, fighting industry ageism and highlighting films that resonate with older viewers.

Stars of a certain age were also honored including 59-year-old George Clooney (as the winner of this year’s career achievement award), 86-year-old Sophia Loren (named best actress for “The Life Ahead”) while 83-year-old Anthony Hopkins was singled out in the best actor category for his work in “The Father.”

Other films recognized by the senior citizen advocacy organization include “Mank,” “Minari,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods.”

In its continued commitment to celebrate quality content, “AARP’s Movies for Grownups” has expanded to honor standout TV programs in new categories.

NBC’s acclaimed drama “This Is Us” was named best series.

“We are excited to share this year’s Movies for Grownups Awards honorees and celebrate the work of these formidable filmmakers,” AARP film and TV critic Tim Appelo said with Thursday’s announcement. “Even during these trying times, creators continue to give audiences riveting imagery, captivating storytelling and indelible performances. We have expanded our categories into TV to reflect changes in how audiences consume content, and we can’t wait to share the stories of those whose work enriched our lives this year.”

This year’s virtual event is hosted by the “Today” show anchor Hoda Kotb and will be broadcast by Great Performances on March 28 at 8 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings).
