United Way announces availability of Emergency Food & Shelter funds

United Way of Livingston County received notice the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) has allocated $13,342 to supplement emergency food and shelter services in Livingston County during Phase 40, Deb Howard, United Way executive director and the local EFSP chair said. “This will provide much needed food assistance to families.”

To be eligible to apply for the funding, an organization must:

Be a private voluntary non-profit, faith based or local government agency

Be eligible to receive federal funds.

Have an acceptable accounting system in place.

Have a valid Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)

Have a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) Number

Conduct an independent audit or annual review.

Practice nondiscrimination.

Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.

If a private voluntary organization, must have an unpaid, volunteer board of directors.

EFSP and CARES funds must be used to supplement existing food and shelter programs and may not be used as seed money for new programs. The responsibility of participating organizations is to provide aide within the intent and specified timeline of the program; and to provide expense reports and required documentation as proof to how the funds are spent.

Both funds will be administered by United Way. How the funds are distributed throughout the county will be determined by a Local Board made up of representatives from Red Cross, OSF St James Health Care, Salvation Army, Livingston County Housing Authority, Institute for Human Resources, Local Church Representative, Livingston County Probation, Labors Union and community representative-. Organizations interested in applying should contact Deb Howard, United Way of Livingston County, 815-844-9054 no later than May 30, 2023.

The Program supplements and expands the ongoing work of local service providers to offer additional shelter, food and support to individuals and families who are hungry, homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and in economic crisis. Jurisdictions that qualified for funding were selected based on unemployment rates and number of individuals living below the poverty level compared to other Illinois geographic areas.
