United Way of Cass County to provide income tax assistance

Feb. 10—United Way of Cass County will once again provide the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program this year.

VITA is to benefit those from low- to moderate-income households, and the disabled, elderly and veterans.

Free tax preparation services are not available if in 2022 you: owned/sold rental property, owned/sold a business, sold stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, purchased health care through the Marketplace (Form 1095-A), or had a Health Savings Account. Due to the nature of this program, there are other scenarios in which the United Way of Cass County would be unable to prepare your taxes. The nonprofit will do its best to screen out unqualified taxpayers, but an unseen scenario could arise.

This program, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, is for Cass County households earning $60,000 or less. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified households in Cass County.

The United Way intake site will be operating by appointment only on Tuesdays and Thursdays during scheduled times. Appointments will continue through March 30.

Taxpayers can begin scheduling appointments by contacting our office at 574-753-3533. A high volume of calls are expected. If nobody answers, please press 2 to leave a message for marketing manager Karli Armstrong. Leave your name and number, and someone will get back to you. Taxpayers may be eligible to prepare their own taxes for free online at myfreetaxes.com.
