United Way hosts Family Fun Day

Sep. 10—United Way of Aiken encouraged community togetherness by hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center.

The event was brimming with activity booths from face painting tables to wheel-of-fortune style games. Along with the activities, United Way partner agencies, including Children's Place, Aiken Tri-Development Center and the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department, were on hand to share information about their organizations.

"The goal for today is just to provide a fun, family-friendly opportunity for anybody to just come out and enjoy the games and learn a little bit more about our partners," said Emily Scotten, the event's organizer and the director of marketing for United Way.

Danielle Elliott, vice chair for United Way, said the event "just gives families around the area a chance to get to know us and what United Way offers."

United Way's in-house program, Project VISION, was represented at the event, as well. Project VISION provides home repairs to seniors and low-income residents of Aiken County. An interactive table allowed kids to safely hammer nails into a board, "teaching them that they can have a part in helping someone in their community," said Lizzie Abshire, director of Project VISION.
