United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties offering spring Health Check May 4 in Adrian

ADRIAN — The United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties and ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital will offer low-cost health testing along with a multiple agency health fair as part of their spring Health Check next month.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon May 4 at the St. Mary’s activity center at 305 Division St. in Adrian, according to a news release from the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties.

The cost for a 22-panel blood test is $20 and includes the following tests: complete blood count, glucose, kidney function, sodium, potassium, chloride, carbon dioxide, thyroid function and cholesterol check.

Additional vitamin D and HA1C tests are available at a minimum cost. Vitamin D tests measure how much vitamin D is in the body. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and a lack of it can lead to health problems, including cardiovascular disease. HA1C (also called glycohemoglobin) is a blood test that aids in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. It is an index of a person’s blood sugar from the previous few months.

All tests range in price from $5 to $20.

A 12-hour fast is recommended before blood tests.

The costs for this project are held to a minimum due to partnership collaboration. Initial funding for the project comes from the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties and ProMedica Hickman Hospital. The hospital conducts all of the testing and lab work, and the United Way coordinates the health fair with partner agencies. The volunteer staffing is coordinated by community partner the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh.

“This is a much-needed service for the communities we serve,” Laura Schultz Pipis, executive director of the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties, said in the release, thanking ProMedica Hickman Hospital for helping make the event possible.

Free medication disposal will be offered on site. No syringes, liquids or creams are accepted. This is a safe way for residents to dispose of any expired or unused prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. Drop-off is anonymous, and any patient identifying information will be destroyed.

The medication disposal is made possible through a partnership with the Lenawee County Substance Abuse Coalition, ProMedica Hickman Hospital, Schmidt & Sons Pharmacy and the Adrian Police Department.

Additional services and information are available. The Family Medical Center provides blood pressure checks before blood draws can be made. Vaccines are available each year either from the Lenawee County Health Department or Schmidt & Sons Pharmacy. These organizations also offer vaccines: Family Medical Center, Community Action Agency, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Region 2 Area Agency on Aging.

The Hickman Hospital also provides staffing from its nutrition counseling, diabetes management, home care and hospice care, skilled nursing center, stroke department and pharmacy departments.

Test results are mailed to the individual’s home address. They are encouraged to take the results to their medical professional.

  • May 18 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 8330 Lewis Ave. in Temperance.
