Universal: End is near for Poseidon’s Fury

Poseidon’s Fury, an opening day attraction with Islands of Adventure in 1999, will be permanently closed early next month, Universal Orlando confirmed Tuesday.

The last day of the walk-through attraction will be May 9. A replacement was not announced, but the theme park will “prepare for exciting new experiences for our guests,” Universal said in a statement.

Poseidon’s Fury is part of the Lost Continent land of IOA. “The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad,” a neighboring attraction that closed in 2018. The end of Poseidon’s Fury leaves Lost Continent, which is between the park’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Seuss Landing areas, with Mythos Restaurant, the Enchanted Fountain and a handful of stores and food stops.

Fury is fronted by an enormous stone trident outside an ancient temple. Its story involves an archaeologist who leads groups into a giant battle between Poseidon and Lord Darkennon. The attraction is known for dark spaces, its special effects involving a water tunnel that visitors walk through and its surprising, abrupt finale.

Poseidon’s Fury has been on an on-again/off-again schedule for years. Heavy machinery worked behind a construction wall there last year, but the attraction has been open for several weeks this year.

Other opening-day attractions still going at Islands of Adventure include Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk Coaster, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, Jurassic Park River Adventure, Pteranodon Flyers, the Cat in the Hat ride, One Fish, Two Fish and Caro-Seuss-el.

Universal also said “The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle” show inside IOA’s Wizarding World will have an extended closure starting May 10 “to make way for future show enhancements.”

Other Universal Orlando projects underway are Villain-Con Minion Blast, set to open at Universal Studios theme park this summer as well as the work being done in the KidZone section of the Studios park. Construction continues on Epic Universe, the resort’s third theme park, expected to open in 2025.
