University of Florida anesthetist accused of raping woman at Halifax Health Medical Center

A University of Florida nurse anesthetist who works at Halifax Health Medical Center was accused of raping a woman at the hospital while on duty Monday, Daytona Beach police said.

Joel Gingery, 57, with addresses in Daytona Beach Shores and Ormond Beach, was charged with sexual battery with a deadly weapon or force and false imprisonment, court records show.

Gingery is a Jiu-Jitsu instructor and owner of Trident Jiu-Jitsu in Ormond Beach and was the alleged rape victim's coach, Daytona Beach police investigators said.

Court records showed Gingery was being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bail on Monday.

Spokesman: Suspect's access to Halifax revoked

John Guthrie, spokesman for Halifax Health Medical Center, said in a statement late Monday afternoon that the University of Florida and Halifax Health Medical Center are cooperating with police.

The University of Florida runs the anesthesiology service at the hospital, Guthrie said.

"The employee’s access to Halifax Hospital has been revoked and the employee has been placed on unpaid leave pending employment action," Guthrie said.

"The University of Florida takes accusations of sexual assault seriously and we are committed to providing a safe, secure environment for our doctors, nurses, staff, patients, their families and visitors," Guthrie said in the statement.

Police were called Monday at 10 p.m. to AdventHealth Daytona where the woman sought medical attention. She told police she had been raped at Halifax Health Medical Center by her Jiu-Jitsu coach, later identified as Gingery, the report said.

The woman told police that Gingery invited her to hang out with him at Halifax Health Medical Center and led her to the on-call room where he worked. Once inside the room, Gingery groped, attacked and battered her, according to an arrest report.

Gingery declined to speak to police without an attorney present.
