University hosts Phenomenal Women of Texas Tech event

Women of various backgrounds serving in roles across the Texas Tech community were recognized during the Phenomenal Women of Texas Tech ceremony on Monday in the Student Union Building Ballroom. The event was hosted by the office of Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

This was the third annual ceremony, which honored and awarded many women at Texas Tech including faculty members, staff and students.

"This event is hosted to commemorate Women’s History Month by acknowledging phenomenal women at Texas Tech who are redefining what it means to be a woman in Texas," said Kaylee Sexton, a student and Founder of the Texas Women's Alliance who is also President of the Student Intersectional Leadership Council. "We facilitate this event with the purpose of celebrating the women who defy statistics, who are gradually chipping away at the long road to achieving gender equality, whether purposefully or not. It gives us an opportunity to let the women around us know that they are appreciated, their work is celebrated, and they are phenomenal."

The ceremony was a perfect way to close out what the department called "Women's Herstory Month" on campus by celebrating all that women do for Texas Tech, said Carol Sumner, Vice President of the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
