University of Michigan Health gets state's top hospital ranking: See the list

University of Michigan Health has been recognized as the top hospital in Michigan by U.S. News and World Report.

The Ann Arbor-based health system, the clinical division of Michigan Medicine, is the only one in the state to make the U.S. News Best Hospital ranking's Honor Roll, which lists the top 22 hospitals in the country. It made the Honor Roll both for adult care as well as pediatric care at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

U-M Health is ranked No. 8 in the country for ophthalmology, and received national rankings in the following specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology; rehabilitation; urology, and rheumatology. It also was rated "high-performing" for 19 adult procedures and conditions.

Rankings made after evaluation of 4,500 hospitals

“It’s an honor for U-M Health to receive continued recognition for our exceptional level of patient care,” said Dr. David Miller, president of the U-M Health System and executive vice dean for clinical affairs for the U-M Medical School, in a statement.

U.S. News issues annual rankings after evaluating data from 4,500 hospitals in four categories, including patient experiences, health outcomes, care-related factors and expert opinions from physician surveys. It also evaluates the top 50 hospitals for 15 specialties and uses sources such as Medicare to evaluate care.

The specialties included in the rankings are:

  • Cancer

  • Cardiology, heart and vascular surgery

  • Diabetes and endocrinology

  • Ear, nose and throat

  • Gastroenterology and GI surgery

  • Geriatrics

  • Obstetrics and gynecology

  • Neurology and neurosurgery

  • Orthopedics

  • Pulmonology and lung surgery

  • Rehabilitation

  • Urology

In three other specialties — ophthalmology, psychiatry and rheumatology — the ranking is determined by physician specialists who, over three years of surveys, were asked to name which hospitals they would recommend to their sickest patients.
