University of Sioux Falls caps off spring season with enthusiastic finale

A cold, rainy Saturday didn’t make for the best environment for the USF football spring game, but the Cougars were able to cap off the spring practice with an enthusiastic finale.

The USF defense defeated the offense 14-13 at Bob Young Field, sending USF into the summer on what they hope is a high note. Tyler Schuster threw a touchdown pass to Caleb Kennedy and Nicholas Hernandez made field goals of 39 and 31 yards.

"Any day we can put Coo football on display for our fans and recruits and cut our kids loose in a competitive environment is a great day,” said Jon Anderson, who has compiled a 32-14 record in five years at the helm. “We accomplished that today and I was excited to see the plays that were made on both sides of the ball. We developed a lot of depth this spring session that we can and will put to use next fall. I’m pleased with this team right now and the progress we made together this spring."

The Cougars were NSIC South Division champs last year, going 8-3 to extend their streak of consecutive winning seasons to 27. They’ll return 15 starters in 2022, eight on offense and seven on defense.

USF will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 1, at MSU-Moorhead. The home opener is set for Sept. 10 vs. Minot State.
