Students were immediately taken outside to reduce any possible further exposure.

The Crandon Fire Department and the Forest County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and began an investigation into the possible cause of the related illnesses.

At the elementary school, firefighters found no sign of any harmful gases. Additionally, K9 Units found no sign of contraband or illegal substances in classrooms or lockers.

While authorities were checking the building, one more student and four more staff members became ill on the Middle/High School side of the building.

The Crandon Fire Department checked the middle school and high school for any signs of dangerous gases, and they did not locate any.

Additionally, while the Crandon Area Rescue Squad was helping on the scene, two emergency medical service workers also experienced the same illness.

Oneida County HAZMAT has been requested to respond to the Crandon School District.

Authorities say the symptoms to watch for are feeling lightheadedness, tingling, numbness in extremities, shortness of breath, slurred speech, and rapid heartbeat.

“If you or your child is experiencing any of these symptoms, please seek medical assistance,” added Forrest County officials.

In an email sent to parents, school officials have opted to cancel after-school activities for Thursday. School on Friday and after-school activities have also been canceled as a safety precaution.
