Unlocking the archive: A look back at Slaters

With the announcement of Slaters Hardware closing, the Eagle-Gazette offers up this little bit of history of the iconic store.

While the store has been in existence since 1946, the store didn't move to its current location on Memorial Drive until 1959.

An article about the official grand opening of the Memorial Drive location appeared in the April 7, 1960, Eagle-Gazette.

The article stated, "Remember That Slater motto: 'The Best for You', and drop in to see the friendly folks at the new story during the grand opening Friday and Saturday. Slaters- The family hardware store complete in all departments with friendly service, and the finest quality with the lowest possible price."
