UNLV tops Cowgirls in MW home opener

Sep. 25—The University of Wyoming volleyball team was swept Saturday afternoon in its conference home opener, losing to UNLV 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in the UniWyo Sports Complex.

Wyoming (4-10 overall, 0-2 Mountain West) had a strong start to begin the match, leading most of the first set. But unforced errors — nine while serving — enabled the Lady Rebels to take advantage and escape with a first-set victory.

UNLV (10-3, 1-1) went on to control most of the second and third sets. The Cowgirls finished with 14 service errors, while UNLV had just three.

Teresa Garza led the Cowgirls' offense with eight kills with Tierney Barlow and Sarah Holcomb adding seven and six, respectively. Barlow hit the ball well while in the contest, ending the match with a .667 hitting percentage. Kasia Partyka led UW with 30 assists as it hit .206 as a team. The Lady Rebels, hit .282 for the match.

Defensively, six Cowgirls had one block, and in the back row, Garza and Kendal Rivera led with six digs each. Partyka and Hailey Zuroske added five digs. Overall, UNLV had 35 digs to the UW's 26 and had a slight 5-4 edge in team blocks.

The Cowgirls will next hit the road to play at New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and at Air Force at 4 p.m. Saturday.
