Uno deck removes red and blue cards to keep Thanksgiving dinner politics-free

Toy manufacturer Mattel has released a new Uno deck with the red and blue cards removed in an effort to keep political discussions among relatives at bay.

In the US, red is symbolic of the conservative Republican Party, while blue represents the more liberal Democratic Party.

The card deck, named “nonpartisan Uno”, has been made available to purchase from US retailer Walmart in time for the holiday season.

With many American families currently making preparations for their Thanksgiving festivities, which takes place on Thursday 28 November, Mattel hopes the nonpartisan deck will help keep the peace around the dinner table.

“40 per cent of people admit that opposite political views and voting patterns are problematic within their families,” Mattel states in a promotional video for the game, citing research conducted by YouGov.

“While political discussions are important, sometimes it’s just as important to take a break, ESPECIALLY with family!” the company continues.

While Uno decks usually come in a red box, the packaging for the new product is purple.

The classic red and blue cards have been replaced by cards that are orange and purple.

The deck also includes a new “veto” card, which features the word “politics” with a red stop sign on top of it.

The veto card can be used to skip a player’s next turn if they bring up politics during the game.

The launch of the new nonpartisan Uno deck has garnered a divided reaction online, with several people expressing that they never associated the red and blue cards of the game with politics.

“No one is going to throw a fit over red or blue Uno cards,” one person tweeted.

“Let’s be honest, if people are arguing politics because Uno has red and blue cards, Uno isn’t the issue,” another remarked.
