UNO Pizzeria Deep-Sixes Swampscott Deep Dish Location

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A North Shore casual chain restaurant is deep-sixing the deep dish at its Swampscott location.

The Swampscott UNO Pizzeria said on its Facebook page that the Paradise Road location is closed for good.

"It's with sadness that we write to let you know that our SWAMPSCOTT UNO has closed," said a message posted late Monday. "We have enjoyed being a part of this wonderful community and will truly miss the friendships and partnerships we have made."

The Norwood-based chain famous for its Chicago-style deep-dish pizza is among those that struggled with pandemic restrictions for over a year and hoped for a big rebound with state COVID rules set to lift last spring.

"We're looking forward to a really robust summer," UNO Chief Executive Officer Erik Frederick told Patch in March 2021. "I think it could look a lot like the Roaring 20s."

Yet, staff shortages then became a barrier for UNO and many similar casual chain restaurants. Multiple UNO locations across the state that were once open until midnight or later before the onset of the coronavirus crisis now close as early as 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends.

The Swampscott location's Facebook age was filled with promotions in recent weeks — but the overwhelming majority of which were nationally based.

There are 16 remaining UNO locations in Massachusetts with Revere the remaining North Shore location.
