Unoccupied flatbed truck rolls into front of Dollar General store

Sep. 26—An unoccupied 18-wheeler truck rolled through the parking lot of a Dollar General store Friday night and slammed into the building, leaving a gaping hole and damage estimated at $30,000.

The crash was reported about 9:35 p.m. at the store in the 2500 block of Lee Avenue, according to an accident report filed by Officer J.B. Ellis of the Sanford Police Department.

The 2016 cab was attached to a flatbed trailer and registered to PTL Express LLC on Cameron Drive in Sanford, the report said. The total weight of the truck was about 80,000 pounds, Ellis said in the report.

The truck was parked in the lot at Kendale Shopping Center at the Judd Street side where the store is located.

"The vehicle was unoccupied and rolled into the front of Dollar General, striking the building," Ellis reported.

A witness told Ellis that the truck was moving slowly, and no one appeared to be inside, the report said.

The estimated speed of the truck at impact was 5 mph, the report said. Damage to the cab was estimated at $2,500.

A store employee reported hearing the crash and upon looking, saw no one inside.

It was not known if the truck driver was found nor why the vehicle rolled.

A plywood board was still across the front of the store Monday morning.
